COMMENT

Which of the two songs:

1) had a deeper impact on you, emotionally?

2) helped you connect with the deep sense of the immigrants' nostalgia and lonesomeness?

  1. The second song, "Lacreme Napulitane" had a deeper emotional impact on my. The first song, "Santa Lucia Lontana", is about the distance between the singer and his hometown Naples, as well as the Santa Lucia area. This explains the idea of one longing for his home. "Lacreme Napulitane", on the other hand, is a song to the man's mother. It is more emotional because not only is there a connection of homeland, but there is a familial connection as well. This man misses more than just his home, he also misses his family. This song also helped me to connect with the immigrant's loneliness and nostalgia of his home because he brings up his family. He starts of the song as if he is writing a letter home, and asks them to add a place for him at the dinner table on Christmas because he is lonely. He is missing his home and he is missing his family, spending time with them and having their holiday traditions.

  2. "Lacreme Napulitane" has the bigger emotional impact on me as it has the deeper lyrics. This song seems to be written as one mans feelings how he misses his family and his town. "Santa Lucia Lontana" seems to be really general and about multiple peoples feelings. The song "Lacreme Napulitane" though he uses all sorts of imagery when he sings his bread has gone bitter. What I suppose really did it for me was when he sings about setting his place at the table because that's something I miss a lot from when my whole family was together particularly on Christmas. I think everyone can relate to missing their family.

    1. I though "The bread is very bitter," was a great imagery. You can really feel the sorrow of loneliness. they endured.

    2. Phillip, I definitely agree to your statement, "...he sings about setting his place at the table...". This verse in the song, replicates how he remembers what it is like to be home, and that imagining it was the only way he could to some degree feel comfort. Thinking about how there was a plate set for him at the table and preparing the festive day with his mother on Christmas Eve.

  3. The song "Lacrime Napoletane" had a deeper emotional impact on me emotionally because of the singer's pain in his voice and the lyrics. In one line of the song he express how Americans are predators who consume Italians immigrants. I internalized that lyric because of the texts we have been reading in class. Most of the images from the films depicted hardships that Italian Americans had to endure.
However, the song Santa Lucia Lontana helped me connect with the deep sense of the immigrants' nostalgia and lonesomeness because of the images paired with his hometown of Naples and the line where he describes that the people there don't need money to be happy, unlike in America where they need money to support family back home.

  4. The song, "Lacrime Napoletane," had a deeper emotional impact on me. This song was jammed packed with lyrics filled with sorrow. In this song I could picture the loneliness of an immigrant far away from home. I can feel the homesickness, missing the family, especially in the holidays. It was really sad.

  5. The musical arrangement in conjunction with the heartfelt lyrics of "Santa Lucia Lontana" evoked empathy from me. The lyrics - "Santa Lucia, there is only a small bay but the farther you are the more beautiful you seem" represents the theme of longing for your home no matter how small or insignificant it is to the rest of the world. By using the word "you" in the line "the more beautiful you seem" the artist is using personification to give the physical location of his home humanesque qualities which helps me as a listener relate to the feeling of missing this place even though i've never been.

  7. The song "Lacrime Napoletane" had a deeper emotional impact on me. The sound of the music being played in the background along with the images sets an idea of how sad this person is. It helps me connect with the immigrants' nostalgia and lonesomeness because the man is writing to his family of how much he misses them and yearns to see them. The lyric "I'll stay here to work for all of you," shows that he is willing to sacrifice himself for his own family and stay in America. This truly shows that he is all alone and has no one to support him.

  9. The song “Lacrime Napoletane” affected me more. It was more personal than the first song. The part I liked most was the first words, “Dear mother”. When at most desperate moments I believe everyone looks for the helping hand of the mother. Maybe because I am and immigrant myself and all my family is far away, I was brought to tears instantly as I heard those first words. The author opens his heart to her. He feels as a child himself, far away from home, tired and homesick. A very happy time of the year for the rest of the world is the highest point of his tremendous loneliness.

    1. I agree with the "mother" concept, and that it made the song more personal.

    2. I like the personal attachment to the song "lacrime napoletane" because of the reference of longing for his mother. There is a saying that a mother is everything in a child's eye, so it's only right that in the singer's darkest hour he calls on his mother to help soothe him.

  10. The song "Lacrime Napoletane" was more heart=felt for me than "Santa Lucia Lontana". The song explained the tears of many Italian immigrants and their desire to be home for the holidays. The song depicted how there was no hope in America, by mentioning how no amount of money was enough to be away from home. Italians' primary purpose for immigrating to America was to gain sufficient funds for their family at home, but when away from home, there is no amount of money sufficient enough to feel comfortable.
I remember being away from home for the very first time during the Thanksgiving holiday and it was the saddest and most lonely moment that I went through. No amount of food could have replaced the memories and moments best spent with family. So, in a sense through the song, I can understand exactly how Beppo, Pascal, and Peppino all felt when they too were away from home.

  11. I understood the song Lacrime Napoletane more deeply than the other song because the lyrics described how "lonesome" the Italians felt after they worked so hard to get to America, only to receive "bitter bread". The words were more meaningful to me than in Saint Lucia. They actually described their dark emotions that they felt when they realized that the grass was not greener on the other side.

  12. I believe both of the songs are very emotional. Listening to Santa Lucia Lontana, I was thinking about people who actually were standing on the shore watching how their loved ones were leaving Naples. This is very nostalgic, but I believe Lacrime Napoletane had more emotional impact on me. Mainly, because this song focus more about family rather than on homeland. Beside the plot and lyrics, Lacrime Napoletane sounded more touching to me.

  13. In my opinion, both song were extremely impactful as well as emotional. However, I believe that Lacrime Napoletane was deeper. I enjoyed the format and flow of the song, "letter" like. It was completely honest and raw. I had felt as if the writer had been experiencing regret for coming to America and leaving his country, family and honor.
