Choose a photo you would put on the cover of Son and one for a poster of The Italian.
Describe each one so that we can recognize them clearly (this takes good skills, it's not an easy exercise) and explain the reasons of your choice.

The way They Lived
The photo I would like to put on the cover of Son of Italy is the photo of four men sleeping in a small, crowded room on the floor, next to a furnace. The room looks cramped and is filled with lumber in the coroner that is stacked to the ceiling. The room is also where the men dine in to eat because there is a table with several chairs there. I chose this photo because it depicts the struggle the men had to stomach just to make ends meet.
ReplyDeleteThe other photo that I choose to put one for the poster of The Italian is the picture of a group of children dressed in their undergarments sleeping on the fire escape trying to catch a breeze a mid the summer heat. There are four children in the picture snuggled together with blankets underneath them as a barrier and their eyes are closed. I chose this photo because it illuminates the heat of the summer in NY, which is how Beppo's son little Tony became ill and that is when all of Beppo's troubles began.

For the cover of the "Son of Italy" I would use the photo at 0:15 of the overcrowded ship carrying masses of immigrants. This image represents the hardships that occur for immigrants even before they arrive to their new home, the struggle of the journey, leaving behind their families and homes. While much of the "Son of Italy" doesn't focus on the actual trek to America but instead the hardships faced once in America I feel the thematic tropes of an epic voyage via ship go hand and hand with the everyday struggles faced by Pascal.
ReplyDeleteFor the cover of "The Italian" I'd choose the photo at 4:02 of the three children laying on the hard concrete floor in the corner. With the crux "The Italian" centering around Beppo's ill son and then Beppo's decision to have mercy on Corrigan's daughter this is only fitting.
The photo I choose for the cover of Son of Italy is the picture of the really sad and tired looking man at 1:36 as soon as I looked of him I thought his tired expression summed up the feeling each shovel and pick man felt.
ReplyDeleteAs for the cover of the Italian I would choose the picture of the woman holding the baby at 2:08 the woman doesn't look happy at all and the Italian isn't a happy movie and neither is the picture. Another reason I chose this picture is because it is of a family and that is what Beppo cared most about.

ReplyDeleteA cover picture I would choose for the “Son of Italy”, is the picture of five men sleeping in one room. Four of them are laying on the floor covered, two of which are completely laid down and the other two are sitting on the floor with their back against the wall and above their heads there are two filled bags pinned in the wall. The other person is sitting in one improvised bed made out of wood in the middle of the back wall. His right hand is in his chin and the other over his leg. It is rather a small room full of dishes, some of them are hanging on the wall and the rest are placed in two shelves. Under the shelves there is a woodstove on top of which there appears to be a wood chest and two loaded bags. In front of the stove are a pair of boots. I would choose this picture because D’Angelo describes many rooms in America and I think that all of them actually looked something like this. Almost all the time he slept on small rooms with so many other workers. They were kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms all in one. Most of the time he lay on the floor, and he had with him a cover that was made by his mother when he left from Italy. But also the room is the place he starts to write when he is left alone in the car in New York.
ReplyDeleteThe picture I would chose for a poster of “The Italian” is the picture of a mother holding a child. She is standing in front of a building with the baby in her hands. Three men are sitting on a bench across from her and they all have hats. It looks like a sunny day based on the shades that form a big contrast with the light. The building looks old, made of small bricks.Even though Beppo is the main character of “The Italian”, Annette and baby Tony are his life. And the lady in this picture looks like Annette holding her child in her arms.
The photo that I would put on the cover of Son of Italy is the picture of several men cramped into on little room on 1:16. This shows how expensive it is to rent a room as an immigrant and the limited amount of space you get. It also shows the tired faces of these men from a long day from work. It is similar to the Son of Italy because Pascal and his gang would share a room together despite the limited amount of space. I chose this photo because it shows that it is a room in which these men call “home” and can always go back to whenever they had a tiring day.
ReplyDeleteFor the cover of The Italian, I would choose a woman holding a baby at 2:09. This shows a image of Beppo’s wife holding his son and waiting for Beppo to come home with milk. I chose this photo because the worried face of the woman in the picture is similar to the face of Beppo’s wife who is worried about her ill son.
I like the choices that Michelle has chosen because the images chosen matches the story line for both "Son of Italy" and "The Italian". "Son of Italy" was the story of a man who had to undergo severe hardships to become successful, and in particular his sleeping arrangements was one of the most difficult. The movie "The Italian" depicted the life of an Italian Immigrant who had to experience the death of his infant son along with other adversities, so that photo of a woman holding a baby is a perfect fit.

"Son of Italy" is about a men and his struggles in America. It's about a men who continues to fight through his struggles in order to make his American dream come true. For "Son of Italy," I would use the picture of the men laying on a bed on two barrels.I think this picture depicts Pascal's struggles in America.
ReplyDeleteFor "The Italian," I would use the picture of the women standing outside holding a baby. In the background sit three man. I get a sense that the men in the picture are looking after the woman and her baby. In The "Italian," Beppo tried his best to take care of his family.
I choose the photo of the men sleeping in their bunks as the cover photo for Son. It appear at 1:12 in the video posted. This photo describes the conditions Pascal had to live in while he was working in New Jersey for the mean foreman. He was living with a handful of other workers in poor conditions.
ReplyDeleteThe first photo shown in the video is the picture i choose for the poster of the Italian. It shows a lot of Italians on a boat heading over to America. I think this sums up the overall idea of the Italian. Beppo' whole journey started on that boat ride over to America.
The photo that I would put on the cover of “Son Of Italy” is the one that appears on 1:35 in the video “The Way They Lived”. On the picture, an young man is sleeping on a wooden board that lays on top of two barrels. The room looks very dirty, it looks like that there was a fire in the room and now everything looks like burned. The person certainly looks young, but from the look of his face one can easily identify that his life is full of obstacles. He looks stressed, tired and suffering from malnutrition. This picture reminds me the stories Pascal tells in his book.
ReplyDeleteThe photo that I would put as the cover of Son of Italy is the tired and sad looking man at 1:33. When I first saw the picture, I was reminded of Pascal's struggles towards the end of the book, where he fell into severe poverty in an attempt to achieve his dreams. It reminds me of the exhaustion he faced at the end.
ReplyDeleteFor "The Italian" I would use the picture of the woman holding her baby at 2:06, where she is sitting next to a ladder and there are sacks in the background. The lady seems to be lost in thought, maybe even praying. It could be for the well being of her child. She doesn't look very happy. "The Italian" focused on Beppo's family, and the latter half dealt with Beppo and Anette's struggles as well as the death of their son and I believe this photo would be a good cover for that.
The photo that I would chose to be the cover of "The Son of Italy" would be the picture of the buildings. When all of the men traveling to American arrived they did not see what they expected at all. they expected a land of riches. In this picture, you see apartment on top of apartment.; there is laundry hanging out on some of the "balconies" and there is garbage on the floor. There are only two people at the center of the image. From far away it appears to be a father and a son. This picture shows that you have to have faith that things will just get better; they will not always be good fro the beginning. Also, the son and father seem to portray the relationship he has with America. He is an emigrant, he is a new, a baby, and America is his father now.
ReplyDeleteFor "The Italian", I would chose the image of the children playing on the fire escape. There is laundry hanging, one child sticking out of a window and on the fire escape there are approximately five more children. I believe this picture portrays it accurately because of the danger these children are putting themselves into. the main character of "the Italian" put himself in this peril to live a better life with his wife; a risky one. One that cost him the lfie of his child.

DeleteThe prime photo that I believe would create the most impact and perhaps properly portray "Son" and "The Italian" is one captured in the video "The Way They Lived". In this picture, one man sat alone on two standing barrels with what appears to be a plank of wood and a small blanket. In correlation with "Son" and "The Italian", this picture portrays a man who is trying to survive, alone and helpless in the cold weather. His face depicts unhappiness, life as unsatisfactory, hunger, and a sense of loneliness.
ReplyDeleteJust like this photo, Pascal, who for the majority of his initial time spent in America, slept in unhealthy and uninhabitable places, with no place to lay his head for sleep, or sit to eat. Pascal, in his autobiography, was a reasonably sized young man before he left for America, and when he arrived and began to live on his own, due to lack of proper nutrition from foods and proper medicine for injuries, he began to look unlike himself.
In the film, "The Italian"; Beppo, the main character, was an example of this photo in deeper meaning. Although Beppo never really exhibited that he lived in such living quarters, he certainly portrayed how the Americans valued immigrants; with no consideration of where they lived or how they survived. Alone, Beppo struggled to make an honest living while raising his family. With an unhealthy and uninhabitable living place, Beppo lost his son and the look in his eyes were very similar to that of the man in the photo. A sense of feeling empty. Beppo felt as if he lost a battle and with that could not recover from such loss and this picture exhibits a loss; a sense of no success.
